SAM AND MONICA CALAVITTA
Sam and Monica Calavitta, pictured here with their nine children, live in Orange County, California. Family is a very important part of their lives and the Treigning Lab is an extension of that family. Their desire is that anyone who comes into the Treigning Lab will feel like they belong and have direction for their own pursuits, whatever they may be. At the Treigning Lab, every client is important and individuals goals can be discussed, planned, and achieved.
SAM “Coach cal” CALAVITTA
Sam Calavitta lives in Yorba Linda, California with his wife, Monica. They have 9 children: Ciena, Antonio, Gino, Genoa, Catania, Aveliana, Angelo, Macario, and Marcello. He has been teaching and coaching for nearly 35 years; and is most recognized for his work in the classroom as an Applied Mathematics teacher. Having taught all levels of mathematics from remedial classes all the way to Advanced Placement Calculus, Multivariable Calculus, and Differential equations, Sam has been the recipient of many teaching awards. In 2005, he was recognized as the best Calculus teacher in the world, and in 2009, he was awarded the prestigious Siemens Award for Advanced Placement.
Long recognized as one of America’s top high school math teachers, Sam has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Parenting Magazine, Power Seller Magazine, and on Cable Network KCOT Television. OC Family Magazine selected him as one of 11 Heroes Among Us in Orange County in 2008 and he was featured in the Le Monde, the largest newspaper in France. He is currently employed by Fairmont Preparatory Academy in Anaheim, California as a Master Teacher.
He has written and published several mathematics books, including an interactive Calculus textbook, a book on teaching early algebra to mastery, as well as a comprehensive 35-week lesson plan guide to acing the Advanced Placement Calculus Exam. He is presently, a multi school district math consultant as well as a seminar presenter and a keynote speaker.
On a personal level, Sam enjoys both training for and competing in Ironman Triathlons; has completed 17 Ironman distance triathlons, and has qualified for the world championships in Kona Hawaii in 2021.
Outside of the classroom, Sam enjoys being with his family. As he puts it, “There is never a dull moment with a large family.” He considers his wife Monica as the perfect partner not only in life but in all business as well. Together, they wrote a book outlining stories of the students in his classroom experiences, Making a Difference: Award Winning Math Teacher Changes the World One Student at a Time. “She is amazing!” He says. “She is a credentialed teacher, has nine children, runs marathons, and takes amazing care of her family. I like to think of her as a Missionary Mom,” continues Sam, “She’s one awesome lady!”
As a springboard to The Treigning Lab, Sam and Monica, operated a very dynamic wrestling camp for 17 years in North Western Montana, the Eternal Warrior Wrestling Camp. It was known as the toughest wrestling camp in America and had one purpose – to make a difference in the lives of young men and women worldwide through the sport of wrestling and through the foundational principles of morality as taught in the Bible.
